Silver oak, also called "silky oak" or "lacewood", is a beautiful Austrailian tree that was planted in Hawaii around 1880. This medium sized tree grows from 40-70 feet in height and 1-3 feet in diameter. The pinkish brown heartwood has prominent rays that resembles oak. The wood has long fibers and has been utilized in Hawaii for cabinetmaking, furniture, and moulding. The sawdust may casue dermatitis to fair skinned people due to its content of phelnolic acid. Still the wood, when quarter sawn, shows a beautiful lace like figure.
